Men were spotted suspiciously transferring jerrycans of fuel from a van to a boat
A GNR police operation in Santa Luzia, Tavira, led to the seizure of over 10,000 litres of gasoline.
The events unfolded on Friday, December 6 when patrol officers spotted a group of men suspiciously transferring jerrycans of fuel from a van to a boat. Realising they were being watched, the suspects tried to escape by sea.
Reinforcements, including coastal patrol units and border control officers, were able to intercept the group. Two men, aged 24 and 35, were identified, while a 44-year-old man was formally named a suspect (arguido) for “aiding drug trafficking,” GNR police say in a statement.
A total of 401 jerrycans of fuel (worth over 10,000 litres) and two cargo vehicles were seized.
The case has been handed over to the Tavira Judicial Court.
The operation involved several police units from Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira’s Criminal Investigation Team, sniffer dog squads, coastal patrol officers, and even support from Tavira’s PSP police.
