Maritime police are patrolling the coast for more bales and suspicious boats
At least 10 bales of cocaine were seized by maritime police off the coast of the Algarve between last Thursday and Saturday.
Weighing over 11 kilos, the drugs have been handed over to PJ police which is investigating the case.
The first two bales were found by a citizen on Thursday morning on Fuseta Island in Olhão in blue casing and marked as ‘Kenzo’. The man contacted the local maritime police which confiscated the bales, which weighed just over two kilos, and were confirmed to be filled with cocaine.
Another six bales were found between the islands of Tavira and Cabanas on Saturday near the coastline, some of which had the same blue casing and inscription as those found on Fuseta Island and weighing around seven kilos. On the same day, two other packages were found in Vila Real de Santo António, one on Altura beach and the other on Manta Rota beach. Weighing around 2.5 kilos, they were also confirmed to be holding cocaine.
Since these bales were found, maritime police in the Algarve have strengthened their patrols to make sure other bales are quickly found and keep an eye on “any suspicious boats” that may have been carrying the drugs, reports Jornal de Notícias.
