At least 16 people were injured when a box of fireworks exploded at a packed indoor event in São João de Madeira (within the Porto Metropolitan region) over the weekend. Hundreds of people were present when suddenly the fireworks started “shooting off in all directions” – even reportedly under tables. “The panic was total”, said one of those present. Fortunately, none of the injured were badly hurt. Three were treated in hospital, but have since been discharged. Police have identified one 29-year-old man while the local municipality, responsible for organising the event. has said they will be ‘acting judicially against those responsible’.
