29 surfers of various nationalities had to be rescued yesterday after becoming caught up in a ‘very strong riptide’ off Carcavelos beach. The surfers were all brought to shore in safety – 24 rescued by maritime police, the others by lifeguards working for the local council. These riptides are notorious during the winter months, but this one was particularly ferocious, say reports. The incident was called in around 5.30 yesterday evening. The surfers were aged between 15 to 40.
