A second inquiry – this time by the health regulatory entity (ERS) – has found serious failings in the way in which a young pregnant foreigner was treated after entering hospital showing clear signs of pre-eclampsia. Instead of inducing the birth (as is standard practice) obstetric staff at Santa Maria Hospital decided to transfer the 31-year-old to Francisco Xavier on the pretext there were no neo-natal beds available. The young woman went into cardiorespiratory arrest minutes into the transfer. Her baby was delivered by emergency C-section in Francisco Xavier, but the mother died without ever regaining consciousness. IGAS has previously highlighted three ‘fatal errors’ that contributed to this tragic outcome, and sentits findings to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
