3.4 earthquake recorded off Algarve coast early this morning

Quake’s epicenter ‘around 30 kms south of Albufeira’

An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded early this Sunday in the Algarve, with its epicenter around 30 kilometers south of Albufeira.

According to reports, it was felt but caused no personal or material damage.

Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute IPMA adds that the earthquake, recorded at 05:48, “was felt with a maximum intensity of III (modified Mercalli scale)”.

The institute said that the quake “caused no personal or material damage”, stressing that information will be updated if the situation warrants it.

According to the agency, locating the epicenter of an earthquake is a “complex physical and mathematical process that depends on the data set, algorithms and seismic wave propagation models”, so “different agencies may produce slightly different results”.
