“5-times over limit” driver hits police agent, crashes car, drives on wrong side of road and … walks free

A driver described as five times over the limit has been released after fleeing an operation stop, running into a policeman, driving on the wrong side of the road and crashing backwards into an electricity sub-station.

The chaotic antics took place in the early hours of Saturday morning between Lisbon and Cascais

According to reports, the driver had no valid insurance, but he walked free from court, pending police inquiries.

A spokesman for PSP police has stressed that the 40-year-old faces prosecution on various counts, and will have to pay for the removal of his Mercedes saloon which was left sandwiched between the EDP substation and the road in an upright position, the front tyres pointing skywards and the boot in a ditch.

The injured police agent had to be treated in hospital and has since taken sick leave.

The driver’s blood alcohol level was given as 2.59 g/l, which tabloid Correio da Manhã describes as five times over the legal limit.
