57 waste containers distributed around Lisbon to stave off effects of strike

Lisbon City Council has distributed 57 extra urban waste containers around the various parishes of the capital today for residents to deposit their rubbish as bins and recycling stations spill over due to the strike by rubbish collectors. “It is a mitigating measure”, the council’s director of hygiene Nuno Vinagre admits. “They (the containers) won’t be enough, for sure. The city will effectively suffer the impact of this strike”. The unions behind this strike are not returning to work until after the New Year, and have refused to carry out ‘minimum services’.
