A 71-year-old woman has been condemned to six years in prison after being found guilty of aggravated fraud and document falsification in a case in which her lawyer was also condemned, albeit with a suspended sentence. The ruling, by Leiria judges, concerns a woman living in Alcobaça who acted through forged documents to obtain economic gain at the expense of family members’ assets (her own children, and parents). The panel of judges also ruled that the defendant must pay the State around €260,000. As for the lawyer, she was condemned (to a suspended sentence of three and a half years) for aiding and abetting the woman’s fraud, issuing Powers of Attorney without the presence (required by law) of the people in whose names these were being issued.
