Peter King and Cindy Blackman play at jazz festival

Jazz no Inverno’10 festival is being held in the Grande Auditório of the Universidade do Algarve, in Gambelas Campus, Faro, tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

It will feature jazz sessions with Peter King‘s sax backed by the Orquestra de Jazz de Lagos and Cindy Blackman’s quartet Explorations.

Peter King, who performs tomorrow, has had a career spanning five decades. He has been a major influence on the British Jazz scene and has long been considered one of the world’s greatest alto saxophonists.

Although he now concentrates on his work as a solo artist, King has played with many jazz greats including Bud Powell, Red Rodney, The Ray Charles Orchestra, Lalo Schifrin, Philly Joe Jones, Phil Woods and Elvin Jones.

On Sunday the Cindy Blackman quartet Explorations will be on stage. Touted as one of the top drummers in the world, Cindy Blackman can easily move from straight-ahead jazz to rock to funk and back again.

With her fellow musicians Antoine Roney, Marc Cary and Rashaan Carter of the Explorations Quartet she pursues the experimentation and improvisation in jazz.

Both concerts start at 9.30pm and tickets are available at the venue on show days from 7pm.
