Eric Bana plays Henry, a Chicago librarian who suffers from a genetic disorder called Chrono Impairment that causes him to vanish without warning and travel through time and space.
Strangely, rather than appearing in a loin cloth in a Roman amphitheatre full of snarling lions, or playing footsie with Elizabeth I beneath a banquet table, he tends always to bump into a younger woman called Clare (Rachel McAdams).
When Henry meets Clare in a Chicago library, they both understand that he is a time traveller, but she knows much more than this about him as he has not yet been to the times and places where they have met before.
She invites him to have dinner with her and she confesses that she has been in love with him since she was six years old.
He falls in love with her, as she has already with him, and they get married, but his continuing unavoidable absences time travelling and then returning with increasing knowledge of their future makes things ever more difficult for Clare.
