It would appear that your anonymous correspondent (Diversification is needed) hasn´t been here very long.
I can’t remember when it was, but no doubt your archives will be able to supply the details of the juice factory at Silves.
New hotels, houses and golf courses are required because they do help the local economy – they pay licence fees to the council followed by rates (from which many residents claim exemption).
I, for one, do not wish to see the government investing in industry – that should be done with private capital, so perhaps instead of moaning your correspondent could do something positive and invest.
