A mix of emotions

BRANDI CARLILE is coming to Portugal for three concerts. Aula Magna in Lisbon on November 18, Teatro Batalha in Porto on November 19 and Teatro Gil Vicente in Coimbra on November 20.

Brandi Carlile is an American singer and songwriter. Her music has been categorized in many genres: pop, rock, alternative country, indie and folk.

She began to play the guitar and writing songs at fifteen and a year later, she began performing as a backup singer for an Elvis imitator.

Before signing to a major record label, Carlile with twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, performed in local bars in Seattle, US. She sold their self-released recordings during these concerts and began to attract the attention of the music industry after Dave Matthews heard her band at the 2003 Sasquatch! Music Festival.

Columbia Records signed Carlile in 2004 and in 2005 she released her debut album. After which, she went on tour with the Hanseroth brothers for almost two years.

In the same year, she was featured on Rolling Stone’s ‘10 Artists to Watch in 2005’ list. By the end of 2006, she had toured and supported artists like Ray LaMontagne, Johnny Lang, Hanson, Indigo Girls, The Fray, Chris Isaak, Tori Amos and Shawn Colvin.

Her second album, The Story, was released in April 2007. It was produced by T Bone Burnett and includes collaboration with the Indigo Girls on Cannonball song. The album was recorded in an eleven-day-long session with Carlile, the Hanseroth twins, cellist Josh Neumann and drummer Matt Chamberlain. She described the vocals as ‘technically wrong but emotionally right’.

ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy featured three of her songs. Tragedy, What Can I Say and Throw It All Away.

In November 2007, she went to England for her first UK gig at the Borderline in London. In March and April 2008 she toured throughout Australia with Maroon 5 and One Republic. In April 2008 she played four dates in the UK and was a guest performer on the BBC2 show, Later… with Jools Holland. Carlile’s album The Story was released in the UK on April, featuring the lead single Turpentine.

Most recently, Carlile’s song The Story has been featured in a General Motors commercial aired during the Beijing Olympic Games.
