WITH A background in the Royal Navy, Harry Aubrey de Lavenu believes a good business should be based on good solid foundations, punctuality and honesty and should also have a degree of military efficiency!
It is for these reasons that his business, Hammers ‘n’ Blades, has gone from strength to strength since it began in 1999.
Having looked for a niche market when he first moved to the Algarve, Harry stumbled upon the idea to recycle garden waste. Based around the idea that ‘nothing should be removed from the garden’, Hammers ‘n’ Blades offers the ideal solution to clients who are unable to remove excess trees, plants, and so on, from their garden, or are unable to obtain a licence to burn it.
On-site recycling
Now with seven machines – ranging from the size of a Smart car to the size of a Hummer – the company employs six staff and has four vehicles. Covering the entire Algarve, Hammers ‘n’ Blades has built itself up over the years to cater for the typical Algarve garden, which is predominantly made up of pine trees.
“I do a lot of on-site recycling for private clients,” says Harry, who prides himself on the company being environmentally-friendly. “People have started to recognise that it is not just waste reduction, but is a necessity.”
The machines are capable of reducing solid wood into a wood chip and/or shredded garden mulch – primary material for the compost. Woodchip can be used for a variety of things including pathways or can be scattered around cacti as an ideal way of retaining moisture.
Completely ecologically-friendly, no chemicals are used in the recycling of garden waste, which keeps the water table clean and healthy.
