A COURT has ruled in favour of the Korean owners of a dry cleaner in the US, who were being sued for a staggering 54 million US dollars – for losing a pair of trousers!

The case attracted international attention due to the high sum and there have been renewed calls for litigation reform. The judge said that the owners had not violated the Consumer Protection Act by failing to live up to the customer’s expectations of the “Satisfaction Guaranteed” sign that was placed in the store window. Instead of receiving his millions, the owner of the missing trousers has been ordered to pay for defendants’ court fees. He originally tried to sue for 67 million US dollars and said he arrived at the figure after counting up the laws he believed had been broken. The owners of the dry cleaner said the trial has taken an enormous financial and emotional toll on them and has exposed them to widespread ridicule.
