Budget airline Flybe has launched an eco-labelling scheme to enable holidaymakers to determine how green their flights are.

Flybe, which operates from 56 airports in Britain and continental Europe, will give passengers a “green guide” detailing the environmental impact of each flight.

The levels of fuel consumption and carbon emissions as well as noise patterns will be recorded in the guides, which will be provided at the time of booking. Each of the airline’s 70-strong fleet will receive a green grading from A to F.

The airline has also launched a carbon-offset scheme in alliance with PURE, the Clean Planet Trust, to enable passengers to neutralise the carbon trail of their journey.Jim French, the chief executive and chairman of Flybe, acknowledged that air travel was contributing to climate change. “Our eco-label initiative is designed to help consumers identify which type of aircraft or which type of route is the most sensitive choice for the environment,” he said. “Through this we hope the market will encourage airlines to invest in aircraft that are designed for the 21st century and find the balance between the economic needs of the business and the environmental needs of society.”
