Grand Champions

THE EAGERLY anticipated Vale do Lobo Grand Champions tennis tournament, from August 7 until 10 at the Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy, will feature the legendary Björn Borg among many international names lining up to compete for the top spot.

Other confirmed tennis stars participating are Thomas Muster, Goran Ivanisevic, Henri Leconte, Andres Gomes, Nuno Marques, Sergi Bruguera and Fernando Meligeni.

Many residents have their money on Borg to win since he has won a total of 62 singles titles and 11 grand slams in his illustrious career.

According to Premier Sports’ staff, who organise the Grand Champions tournament, this is one of the few times Borg has played in a tournament since he retired six years ago.

Three new players have joined this year’s tour and Portuguese umpire Paulo Oliveira is also a new addition. For the first time, radar will be used for accuracy of decisions made by the umpire.

Multifaceted

Hugo Ribeiro, press officer at Premier Sports, said: “With the calibre of players at this year’s tournament, it was important that all the facilities and technology were of the highest possible standard.”

Ribeiro said: “This year is multifaceted. We are really excited about this year’s event and hope that it is the best yet.”

The total capacity of the stands at the tournament is 2,500 and Ribeiro said: “We want it to feel like an intimate event and, in fact, that is what the players really like about the event here.”

Other attractions throughout the tournament include the Bijou Tennis Show, featuring clowns, and well-known Mansour Baharami, who entertains crowds with his magic tricks using tennis balls.
