KATE AND Gerry McCann have released a new video on the You Tube Channel Don’t you forget about me (http://www.youtube.com/dontyouforgetaboutme), set to the Simple Mind’s track of the same name.
In the video they talk about Madeleine’s abduction, how rare this sort of crime is and the work they have done to find their daughter, Madeleine.
Answering comments that some people feel too much publicity might not be good, Kate says: “Obviously everything we do has a slight risk to it, which is a horrible situation to be in when you are dealing with your daughter. But overall, we felt, rather than sit back and not do anything, this was the right way to go.”
Commenting on the difference between the reaction to an abduction by law enforcement agencies in the USA and in Europe, she said:
“The laws in the States are different to here; they are well ahead of the game. They have their Amber Alert. Within two hours of a child being taken a police report has to be filed. Obviously the response time in Europe has to be quicker.”
The McCanns believe that action to protect children and improve law enforcement agencies’ response to an abduction is necessary across Europe.
Gerry McCann said: “If you make regulation tight in one country, the perpetrators don’t know any boundaries, they will move to country where the legislation is less tight. So, you might be exporting your problem. That is why there has to be an international dimension.”
The purpose of the Don’t you forget about me channel supported by Kate and Gerry McCann and run by the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC) is to use cutting-edge technology and resources to disseminate photographs/ images of and information about missing children from around the world.
