No official information on DNA tests

PORTUGUESE POLICE have not received any results from the DNA tests currently being made in the UK.

The results of DNA testing, on what was purported to be blood traces found in the apartment where the McCann family stayed during their holiday at the Ocean Club, are still unknown.

This is according to Guilhermino Encarnação, the chief officer of Faro DIC, the criminal investigation department of the Polícia Judiciária.

Refusing to make any comment on various news reports from Portuguese and English media, which report that the blood was not from Madeleine, the PJ officer added that until they are officially informed by the Birmingham laboratory, the police will not comment on the case.

“I spoke this morning with the UK team and we were told the traces were still being analysed”.

According to The Times in London, mentioning a four page report, the DNA test results showed that the blood sample was not from Madeleine McCann, but from a man, possibly from the “northern European subgroup”.

The same newspaper says that the conclusion of the analysis was only 72 per cent sure due to the poor condition of the sample. In the meantime, a spokesperson from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham announced that the tests are still going on. “We are surprised with that article because the tests are not finished”.

The Daily Mail reports on its front page today (Thurdsday)that Madeleine McCann died on the night of her disappearance. The newspaper also claims that the PJ already know who killed her and that the blood found is from a man.

Quoting the PJ spokesman, Chief Inspector Olegário Sousa, the Mail adds that the PJ will announce that they have new suspects in the next few days. This information is also published by the Daily Express and the Daily Star.

However, the Faro department for PJ denied all reports from today’s newspapers, stating that Chief Inspector Olegário Sousa’s words were misunderstood and wrongly reproduced.
