ROBERT MURAT’S lawyer has hit out at the British press for misrepresenting his comments in saying that he wanted the McCanns to leave the Algarve and go home.
Francisco Pagarete said the journalist he had spoken with had “manipulated and changed” his statements about the way local people are now viewing the McCann family presence in Praia da Luz, the holiday village from where Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3.
“What I said to that journalist was that, as a resident in the area, I had heard some people complaining about the media circus surrounding the personal drama of that family”, he told The Resident today (Friday).
When asked if he shared that opinion, Mr Pagarete said: “The McCann family has every right to be where they want to be”, adding that they are not the problem, the problem is that the media is sensationalising the matter.
“I repeatedly asked the journalist if he understood what I was saying and he always replied that he did. So I was confident”, he said when asked if he ever considered the possibility of a misinterpretation of his statements.
“I never said what they are saying that I said. Not those words and neither that meaning”, he insisted.
