PORTUGUESE SECREATRY of State for Tourism, Bernardo Trindade, told The Resident that the government is not worried about the McCanns visiting countries that are our main tourist markets, in their effort to find little Madeleine, the girl abducted from Praia da Luz on May 3.
“I understand the effort these parents are making to find Madeleine by visiting European countries such as Holland and Germany, but we are not concerned by their decision to visit those countries. In a near future, we will see them visiting countries that have nothing to do with our tourist market,” he said.
According to Bernardo Trindade, who spoke exclusively to The Resident in a recent visit to the Algarve (June 6), “if we are concerned is not the main question. The important thing is to look at the numbers; there have been no cancelations due to this case of child abduction in the Algarve.”
The Secretary of State emphasised that “Portugal still is a very safe place”. According to him, “this abduction case, despite all the media hype, was an isolated case”. He remembered: “In Portugal, we have 34 children missing, while in the UK there are thousands of them.”
