Second elections called
On Sunday night, it was announced that a second round of voting will take place at the end of October after none of the candidates won 50 per cent of the vote. Incumbent President Joseph Kabila won a 45 per cent share, while nearest rival Jean-Pierre Bemba took 20 per cent. Around 70 per cent of the 25 million registered voters turned out. Five people were killed before the results were announced, when loyalists of the two candidates clashed and sporadic gunfire continues. Mr. Bemba is under UN protection following clashes outside his house.
