LIVERPOOL TOOK on mighty Chelsea at Old Trafford, and destroyed José Mourinho’s dreams of achieving a famous league and Cup double. For 60 minutes the reigning European champions ran the Premiership champions-elect ragged, proving quicker and more inventive in every department.
A John Arne Riise free-kick from the edge of the box after 20 minutes, gave the Reds a deserved lead, which Luis Garcia doubled before the interval with a perfectly flighted shot over the stranded Carlo Cudicini in the Chelsea goal. As Liverpool’s legs grew tired, the Blues mounted a fightback, which almost resulted in the game going into extra time.
A 70th minute Didier Drogba strike initiated a period of sustained Chelsea pressure, that culminated in Joe Cole blasting over the bar from close range in the closing seconds of injury time.
Liverpool had held on, and now take their place in the final at the Millennium Stadium on May 13. Meeting Rafa Benitez’s men there are West Ham, who survived a first half Middlesbrough onslaught at Villa Park to triumph 1-0.
