The Battle of Vitória took place on June 21 1813, just 200 years ago. Having beaten Marshal Marmont at Salamanca in 1812, Wellington determined to push the French completely out of Spain.
He conducted a strategic masterpiece by outflanking his enemy three times and forcing their retreat to the cauldron of Vitória. The Intrusive King Joseph Bonaparte, together with his chief of staff Marshal Jourdan, and their French supporters, were unceremoniously hustled out of Spain, as he lost the battle, his crown and even his chamber pot.
This Wellingtonian triumph inspired Beethoven to compose his only battle symphony and gave heart to the rest of Europe to bring down Bonaparte’s detested French Empire.
Peter Booker, president of the Algarve History Association, continues his series of talks on the major battles of the Peninsular War on Sunday November 17 at 6pm at Bela Romão Croquet Club, situated between Moncarapacho and Fuseta.
