An Angolan man with a history of mental illness who bludgeoned a fisherman round the head with a katana and then threw green paint over police officers has been released on bail, awaiting further convictions.
The 42-year-old is now bound by a TIR order – ensuring that he does not leave his area of residence.
A report in Diário de Notícias relates how the attack took place near Largo do São Francisco in Faro. The victim is reported as telling police that the incident stemmed from his attacker’s desire to ‘take control’ of the area where the fisherman collected shellfish. Fortunately, the fisherman was only slightly injured and has since been released from hospital.
The subsequent assault on police officers came when a PSP patrol, following up on the katana attack, found the Angolan man “painting a wall”.
He apparently launched into a stream of insults as officers approached and then, in a bid to evade arrest, threw a whole tin of green paint at them, badly soiling their uniforms.
A Faro Court heard last week how the Angolan man suffers from mental problems and has a history of causing trouble, added Diário de Notícias.
