Three old maids from the pool

Not quite as Messrs. Gilbert and Sullivan envisaged it, but even the Three Little Maids from School will age eventually.

These Three Maids are part of the mythology of The Everlasting Circle – the musical romp through the seasons presented by the Algarve’s Aperitivo Performance Group. The three women turn up all over the place in folklore – as Norns in the Norse myths, as the Fates in Greek legends, or stirring a cauldron in Macbeth. And they all meddle in the lives of men.

In Aperitivo’s ‘The Everlasting Circle’, a band of Druids and a Chorus of excellent singers (with songs ranging through folk, rock and opera) accompany the action as three rustic Dutch peasants struggle their way through the year, trying to pull the reflection of the moon out of a pond in the winter, build a wall around a cuckoo in spring, and boil up lead to mend a leak in their beer barrel in autumn.

They are accompanied by a Policeman, who stands for the real world; by the Valkyrie Brünnhilde Freud, who stands for the world of the subconscious, and by John Barleycorn, who stands – or falls over – for beer.
