A night guard service started in Ferragudo, Lagoa council, on November 15.
The ‘Guarda Nocturno’ patrols the area from midnight to 6am each day and the service is undertaken in coordination with the GNR. During the first night of operation, the patrol covered 84kms by vehicle and 4kms on foot. There were no incidents reported.
The night guard service operates in different areas of the Algarve and its aim is to supplement GNR and PSP patrols mainly in towns.
Night guards are armed and in uniform, carry a baton, handcuffs and pepper spray, and carry radios to communicate with other emergency services.
The introduction of the service requires an application by residents to the local Mayor.
