Deaths on EN125

A recent head-on collision on the EN125, between a bus and a light vehicle, resulted in two deaths. The couple, both Brazilian, were driving in a Fiat Punto on the Portimão to Faro stretch of the road. The passengers in the bus, belonging to the Rede Expresso coach company, were travelling from Faro to Braga – fortunately, none sustained serious injuries. The fatal accident occurred at 9.10am in the Maritenda area. A 23-year-old man, identified as Fábio Ferreira Lopes, originally from Mato Grosso in Brazil, was killed instantly, alongside an unidentified woman from Quarteira.

Traffic on the EN125 was brought to a standstill for three hours. Witnesses said the driver of the Fiat Punto passed a red light at a very high speed and then veered on to the wrong side of the road after turning a sharp bend. The driver of the coach flashed his lights in an attempt to warn the driver, but it was too late. The Fiat Punto’s two occupants had to be cut free from the wreckage by Loulé Bombeiros. Only one passenger in the bus was slightly injured – a woman in a front-row seat who broke two teeth.
