Queen Mary 2 arrives

The biggest steamship in the world, the Queen Mary 2, arriving in Madeira recently. But despite the celebrations, the regional authorities were on high alert and were briefed to heighten security levels after the British press highlighted the possibility of a terrorist attack during her inaugural voyage. With this in mind, all the island bodies responsible for port safety came together over two days in order to prepare for the liner. Officials also hosted a reception in honour of the ship’s arrival, attended by the president of the regional government of Madeira, Alberto João Jardim. The Queen Mary 2 left Southampton on January 12, bound for Fort Lauderdale in Florida, with 2,500 mostly British people on board.
