Residents of Aljezur are planning to stage a protest this Thursday against the closure of the local tax office. The nearest Finanças office is 30 kilometres away.
This is the grim reality facing taxpayers in the town of Aljezur. Their local Repartição das Finanças is due to be closed down on December 12, as part of the government’s endless cost-cutting measures.
Local people have thus decided to stage a “cultural vigil”, involving local artists, musicians, poets and associations, to decry the sorry state of affairs.
“This service is essential for the population – most of which is elderly. They will now be unable to get fiscal information and support,” say the protest’s organisers.
The demo is scheduled for Thursday at 5pm. Borough councillors are expected to join in.
