Storms batter Madeira

Storm-battered Madeira saw its red alert downgraded one notch this morning as high winds and rain continue to pound the island.

IPMA (the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere) has reduced warnings to “yellow” (one step behind red) after yesterday’s weather saw mudslides, trees toppling and a number of fishing boats destroyed at their moorings.

Winds today (December 11) on the island are still expected to bring gusts of up to 80kph, while the worst waves should have started to calm by midday.

Elsewhere, the Azores is on orange alert (another step down from yellow), as was Faro – though SOL online news service warns Faro’s alert may be upgraded over the course of the day, due to swells at sea which are bringing in waves of between 2 and 3 metres.
