Some years ago I was invited to a tasting hosted by a wine lover and gourmet who lived in the Algarve and is still a regular visitor, Mr. Ron Trimbach no less, a direct relative of the great Trimbach family of Alsace, whose history in wine making stretches back nearly 400 years. If you’re reading this Ron, wherever you may be, thank you again for a truly memorable afternoon!
Ron had a full collection of Trimbach wines in his cellar, starting with the main label varietals through to the Reserve Personelle range, and even some of the prestige Collection labels, along with a few of this producer’s stunning late harvest sweet wines which were all tasted that day.
There were some really great vintages amongst the wines but I remember this tasting as the moment I really fell in love with Riesling. From the entry level Trimbach Riesling (priced in Apolónia at €14.99 – see promotional price below) to the special reserves and different vintages, I discovered the complexity, subtlety and ageing potential of this great grape which is truly at home in Alsace. But to try any of the mainstream labels, especially the Gewurztraminer, is to try these varieties at their purest and most honest; quite simply it’s how they should taste.
And if you are looking for an outstanding dessert wine without breaking the bank, check out the 50cl bottles of the Gewurztraminer late harvest, priced at €29.99. This may sound a little expensive but this precious nectar is worth every cent.
