Health chiefs in the Algarve and Spain are coming up with a ‘Eurocitizen’ discount card, to help people get the specialist care they need at affordable prices.
The initiative was thrashed out on Wednesday last week at a meeting between health authorities of both countries in Vila Real de Santo António.
Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte make up what is called the ‘Eurocity of Guadiana’ – the ethos of which is to broaden and share health services within the two regions.
The idea for the Eurocitizen Card is to offer local people discounts and advantages as well as a broader array of medical specialties at more affordable prices, the health authorities said in a press release. They are also hoping the plan will extend to cooperation on a national level, and thus make up for the lack of doctors in various areas.
The Guadiana Eurocity was created in January 2013. Some of its other goals include sharing equipment and assets, creating a joint touristic brand and organising events in unison.
