First stone laid at university’s new medicine wing

A line-up of government officials and academics witnessed the laying of the first stone of the long-awaited new wing at University of the Algarve (UALG) that will house the institution’s medicine course.

The Secretary of State for Higher Education, Dr José Ferreira Gomes, laid the stone – and then went on to plant 50 pine trees, to take the place of the trees felled during land-clearing work. He was applauded by rectors past and present, the President of the CCDR regional development commission, the mayor of Faro, and many other figures attached to the university. Mayor Rogério Bacalhau said the occasion meant a lot for medical students and was “excellent news for the borough”.

UALG already runs a Master’s course integrated with medicine and has seen 29 of its pupils leave to become doctors.
