ASAE inspectors took to the streets in Lisbon last Friday demanding better wages and protesting against what they call their “very weak social situations”.
ASAE boss Albuquerque Amaral explained how cuts have reduced wages by as much as €250 a month. This means that some staff members now earn around €750, which has made life “very difficult”.
“The main problem motivating us is the absence of a statute,” he told reporters. Indeed ASAE is the only criminal policing entity that does not have a specific statute, he said.
ASAE, standing for the association of food safety and economic activities, is responsible for the “evaluation and communication of risks in the food chain, as well as for the discipline of economic activities in the food sector and non-food sector”.
