Surfing currently contributes around €400 million to the Portuguese economy every year. But the impact of the sport could be “even higher” if it was seen as a “lucrative business”, said the president of the National Surfers Institute (ANS) in a debate that took place at the Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics last week. “The potential is there”, said Francisco Rodrigues adding what so many surfers have been saying for years: “Portugal is seen as the California of Europe.”
