While mainland councils are coming up with new “civil protection taxes” to get ratepayers to fund local rescue services, the Government of the Azores is doing it the old fashioned way. Regional health secretary Luís Cabral announced an €8.6 million cash injection to boost civil protection and renew fire station facilities on all the islands in 2015. Upgrade plans include the purchase of new fully equipped ambulances.
