Lagoa hosts ‘Carmina Burana’

Portugal’s Air Force Orchestra and Lisbon’s Cantat choir will be performing the ‘Carmina Burana’ at Pavilhão Arade in Parchal on February 21.

The “huge production” – as it has been described by maestro Armando Mota – will feature “around 155 musicians”.

‘Carmina Burana’ is a 24-movement cantata by German composer Carl Orff, based on a medieval collection of poems from the 11th to the 13th century.

As Lagoa council organising the event explains, the poems touch upon a number of themes, such as “love, satire and carnal pleasures”.

Film-buffs will recognise ‘O Fortuna’ – a poem that Carl Orff turned into a dramatic composition that went on to feature in many films, TV shows and other mediums of entertainment.

Tickets cost €10 and are on sale at the São José Convent and municipal auditorium.

The concert begins at 9.30pm.
