Portuguese truckers see vehicles “invaded” by migrants in Calais

At least four Portuguese trucks were invaded by migrants in scenes of confusion in the French port of Calais earlier this week.

According to Lusa news agency, none of the truckers were injured, nor was damage registered to their vehicles.

It is a problem, explained trucking company Grupo Patinter, that has been ongoing for years but which has now reached a critical stage as migrants try anything to reach UK.

This week’s ‘bottlenecks’ of lines and lines of trucks was prompted by the strike by ferry workers over job cuts.

Migrants, many of which have been living in camps in Calais for years now, decided to take advantage of the strike to make a bid to reach UK.

Lorry drivers were advised to make sure all doors are padlocked – and they were also warned “not to stop within about 100km of Calais” for their own safety.

Grupo Patinter explained to Lusa that its drivers are told not to resist invaders, but instead to call for the help of police.
