Flights connecting Portimão to Bragança could be operating in January, Portimão’s deputy mayor Castelão Rodrigues has told Lusa news agency.
The news came shortly after Rodrigues confirmed that renovation work at the Portimão aerodrome should be completed next week, giving it “all the necessary conditions required by the National Aviation Authority (ANAC) to host the air link”.
Among the novelties are new boarding and luggage rooms.
Rodrigues stressed that it wasn’t the renovations that delayed the launch of the air link – which was meant to launch in June – but instead the fact that the route is still lacking a thumbs up from the Court of Auditors.
As announced in June, Aero Vip was the only bidder for the air link, which was suspended in 2012 when the EU decided it was no longer economically viable due to improved road conditions.
It will boast two daily flights during the summer and one during the winter, every day except Sundays.
Tickets for the route, which includes stops in Cascais, Viseu and Vila Real, will vary between €32 and €148 – depending on where you stop.
