Portimonense gearing up for coming season

“We are ready for the season to begin,” Portimonense manager Vítor Oliveira told journalists after the conclusion of last weekend’s four-way summer tournament held in Varzim. “I have my starting eleven and, as far as I am concerned, the transfer market can close now.”

Despite numerous changes during both encounters, Portimonense acquitted themselves well, albeit letting a 3-1 advantage slip during the final five minutes against Vitória de Guimarães – they went on to lose on penalties – before beating the hosts 2-1 on Sunday afternoon with Dener and Ewerton providing the goals.

While a decision on trialists Patrick Marcelino and Caique is still outstanding, the Algarveans finally ended their search for another central defender when Ruben Fernandes agreed to return home. The Portimão-born 31-year-old has gathered a wealth of experience after finally leaving (spent two seasons on loan with Varzim) his home club in the summer of 2013, making regular appearances during two Europa League campaigns for Estoril before moving to Belgium where he finished 12th in the top tier Pro League with Sint-Truiden most recently.

A friendly against Sheffield Wednesday in mid-week was next up for Oliveira’s men (played after the Resident went to press) before Farense will be the visitors to the municipal stadium on Saturday morning – kick-off 11am.

There then follows an exhibition match against Porto next Thursday evening at the Stadium of the Algarve in final preparation for the first official fixture of the coming season the following Sunday, July 30, when Portimonense host Chaves in the initial phase of the League Cup.
