An opportunity to hear some of Ireland’s most promising young musical talent is being offered by the Young Dublin Symphonia who are performing two concerts in the Algarve this month.
The Irish are famous the world over for their traditional music and song, but they have also made their mark in the classical music scene with international names like pianist Barry Douglas, flautist James Galway and soprano Celine Byrne.
Emerging Irish musicians are now increasingly choosing the classical route and, in both the cities and the country towns of Ireland, there are groups of young people who have a classical repertoire alongside their interest in popular music.
The 27-member Young Dublin Symphonia is unusual in being drawn entirely from a semi-rural community north of the Irish capital, and in having a Danish conductor. They have performed overseas in Denmark and France and have also collaborated in Ireland with orchestras from Norway and Denmark.
Their repertoire includes traditional chamber-group works by Mendelssohn, Vivaldi and Carl Nielsen, together with a selection of traditional airs and modern classics, including Irish favourites and pieces by Piazzolla, Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Jenkins.
Their programme in Tavira will be presented at a concert in the auditorium of the Irene Rolo Foundation (Rua Freixinho de Vide, near Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo and the Living Science Centre) at 3pm on Saturday, March 24. The Foundation is a leading charity in the service of the differently-abled and has extensive activities in the areas of prevention, rehabilitation, training and integration.
The orchestra, the local organisers and the Foundation have come together to invite all those with a love of music and its appeal to all ages and abilities to join them for a delightful hour of entertainment and fellowship at the Saturday event.
The orchestra will also be featured in a concert at Faro’s Hotel Eva (Avenida da República) on Tuesday, March 27 at 6pm, in a joint performance with the Youth Orchestra of the Maria Campina Regional Music Conservatory of the Algarve.
