Lagoa hosts first international cinema festival in May

Lagoa will be hosting the town’s first international cinema festival in May, in a bid by the council to promote prized films that are not usually known to mainstream audiences.

Entitled ‘ALGARES,’ the festival will feature everything from movie screenings and classes to conferences and exhibitions.

The event will begin on Monday, April 30 with the opening of an exhibition entitled ‘A aventura do cinema’ at the municipal auditorium as well as the screening of ‘A Fábrica do Nada’, a film by Portuguese director Pedro Pinho which was prized at the Cannes Film Festival, at 9.30pm.

The initiative will also debut the Lagoa Short Film Festival, which will take place on Friday, May 4 at the Nobel International School.

On Wednesday, May 9, the auditorium of the São José convent will host a class about the origins of cinema which will be open to the general public as well as teachers and students from Algarve schools.

The next event will be a conference about cinema classics at the municipal library on Wednesday, May 16.

There will also be a series of events taking place for schoolchildren before the event comes to an end with the screening of ‘O Futebol’ by Sergio Oksman.
