Lisbon has been shortlisted for the European Green Capital Award 2020, being described by Diário de Notícias newspaper as the “favourite” to receive the accolade.
It is the third time that the Portuguese capital is in the running for the award, and the second it has been shortlisted as one of the three finalists.
For the 2020 award, Lisbon is facing the opposition of Gent (Belgium) and Lahti (Finland). The winner will be announced in June. If Lisbon is selected, it will become the first Portuguese city to earn the distinction.
Guimarães had also presented a bid but did not make the final three.
The goal of the award is to “enhance implementation of EU environment policy at the local level, share experiences and visions between European countries and local governments and take the idea of sustainable urban development closer to the people.”
It was launched on May 22, 2008 and the first award was given to Stockholm for the year 2010.
