Loulé’s LUZA light festival seeks young talent for second edition

Organisers have confirmed that LUZA, the light art festival that took place for the first time in Loulé last year, is returning for its second edition on the first three days of November.

The three-day debut edition of the festival attracted 30,000 people thanks to its many exhibitions and light-themed events.

Like last year, young artists are being invited to take part in the event by participating in LUZA Lab, an initiative that will provide financial support to artists who live in Portugal and are under the age of 30.

The deadline for submissions is September 17. Organisers will announce the successful bids on October 4, around a month before the event begins.
Scottish resident Beau McClellan, described as one of the most established contemporary lighting design artists, is the mastermind behind the project and said last year that he wanted to shine the spotlight on national talent.

“The problem in Portugal is that many times national talents are disregarded. There is a tendency to value those from abroad, maybe because people think they are more exotic, even if they are at a lower level than what we have here,” he told Barlavento newspaper.

The artist added: “I want to show that we have very good people and, mostly, give young, emerging artists an opportunity.”
