The body of a man was found floating in the water of the Ria Formosa near the salt pans of Olhão at around 1pm on Friday.
Maritime police arrived and set up a safety perimeter to investigate the scene.
The body did not show any signs of violence and was not in an advanced state of decomposition, which suggests that the man died sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Very little was found in the way of identification. The man was only wearing shoes and pants. His body was taken to the legal medicine institute of Faro for an autopsy to be carried out.
