IP (Infraestruturas de Portugal) roads authority has issued a statement pledging 107.5 million euros in “conservation works” for national highways over the next three years.
Among projects are “various types of maintenance interventions” including “the repair and improvements of pavements, replacement and adequacy of horizontal and vertical signage, adjustment of security barriers and other protective equipment, slope stabilisation, conservation of fences, treatment of drainage systems, cleaning of borders and adjacent areas and maintenance of works of art (sic)”.
In all, 18 contracts have been signed “one for each district adjusted to the different characteristics of each region”.
By 2022, this should see 14,000 kms of national highways markedly spruced up.
But the millions soon ‘dwindle’ in impact when broken down into districts: for example the Algarve is only due to receive 4.2 million euros.
According to reports, this is the least amount any district will be getting – and yet locals are only too aware of the appalling condition of many of the region’s roads. Will €4.2 million be enough?
Other areas are due to benefit by the following amounts:
Aveiro – €6.9 million
Beja – €8.2 million
Braga – €6.4
Bragança – €5 million
Castelo Branco . €4.7 million
Coimbra – €6.1 million
Évora – €5.2 million
Guarda – €5.3 million
Leiria – €5.6 million
Lisbon – €6.5 million
Portalegre – €5.3 million
Porto – €6.6 million
Santarém – €7.2 million
Setúbal – €6.8 million
Viana do Castelo – €5.8 million
Vila Real – €5.7 million
Viseu – €6 million
