American Pop art icon James Gill will be launching an exhibition of his works at the Conrad Algarve Ballroom on Friday, September 7 at 7pm, with the support of ArtCatto gallery.
The exhibition is described as a retrospective of his work, showcasing the evolution of his work throughout the years.
James Gill was born in Tahoka, Texas in 1934 and and grew up in San Angelo, Texas. During his military service, Gill worked as a draftsman and designed posters. He then returned to Texas to continue his studies while working for an architectural firm.
He gained notoriety in 1962 when the Museum of Modern Art in New York added his three-part painting of Marilyn Monroe called Marilyn Triptych to its collection.
His works later become the covers of renowned magazines such as Time and LIFE and he depicted, first-hand, entertainment figures such as John Wayne and Paul Newman.
He decided to withdraw from the art world in the early 1970s although he never stopped painting. His work would remain hidden from the public for over two decades.
A total of 35 works, including some of his best-known original pieces, along with limited, signed prints, will be on display at the Conrad Algarve Hotel until November 7. The inauguration will take place between 7pm and 9pm, and a short film about Gill’s work will be shown, followed by a Q&A session with the artist.
