Just as Algarve braces itself for the court ‘fight’ pitting citizens against oil companies and the government (see separate story), three offshore areas within the proposed ‘drilling landscape’ have been rocked by early morning earthquakes.
The first came just before 7am 55 kms west-southwest of Sines, measuring 3.9 on the Richter Scale, with the second and third following six minutes later, and measuring 3.3.
All three quakes appear to have pretty much shared their epicentres, with populations in Sintra and Cascais reported to have felt the ‘earth move’.
No material damages have been reported.
The quakes – easily checked on IPMA’s website – will have taken place within the Lavagante and/ or Santola drilling concessions held by GALP and ENI – the two companies now in a pitched battle against the will of local populations.
