Left Bloc refuses to give up on fight against A22 tolls

After many failed attempts, Bloco de Esquerda (BE) has presented yet another draft resolution urging the government to abolish the Algarve’s A22 motorway tolls, “once and for all”.

It has been nearly seven years since the tolls were introduced on the region’s motorway by Pedro Passos Coelho’s PSD government with the support of the PS socialists. However, according to BE, this was “a very serious mistake which has only hurt the Algarve.”

According to the left-wing party, the Algarve has “lost economic and social competitiveness” compared to Andalusia and the region’s mobility has gone “two decades back in time”.

The only alternative, the EN125, is also frequently described as an “urban road” known for its high rate of accidents and road deaths.

These complaints and opinions have been presented many times before to the government, which time and time again has refused to do away with the tolls.
